Who’s Behind This
Emma Cartwright
Hi, I’m Emma — sustainable travel advocate, van life enthusiast, and the writer behind Budget Van Journeys. I started this blog because I believe travel doesn’t have to cost the earth — literally or financially. Every journey I take, and every guide I write, is shaped by one core conviction: you can explore the world on a budget without leaving a damaging footprint behind.

My approach to sustainable travel isn’t about perfection. It’s about making smarter, more conscious choices — ones that protect natural environments, support local economies, and give back to the communities and wildlife we visit. Imperfect sustainability still counts, and that’s a message I’ll never stop sharing.
“Van life and sustainable travel aren’t opposites of adventure — they’re the purest form of it.”
Why Budget Van Journeys
Did you know that 76% of travellers now want to travel more sustainably? And yet, with airlines, cruise companies, and major hotel brands contributing significantly to global carbon emissions, most people either assume sustainable travel is impossible or simply don’t know where to begin.
That’s exactly the gap I built this site to close.
Budget Van Journeys was created for the traveller who wants to do things differently — to move slower, spend smarter, and leave places better than they found them. Whether you’re considering van life for the first time, planning a low-cost road trip, or just trying to make more responsible choices on the road, this is your resource.
Every guide, route, and tip here is filtered through the same lens: real-world, budget-conscious, and sustainability-minded.
What You’ll Find Here
Budget Van Journeys — Routes, itineraries, and trip ideas that prove meaningful travel doesn’t have to be expensive.

Van Setup — Practical guides to building or outfitting a van that works for your lifestyle and your budget.
My Approach
I’m passionate about four things in particular:
✍️ Writing articles and guides that help travellers genuinely understand what sustainable travel looks like in practice — not just in theory.
🎤 Creating podcasts that interview all kinds of sustainable travellers from different backgrounds, to explore what sustainability on the road really means to different people. Find them over on Instagram at @thesustainabletravelguide — coming soon to Spotify and YouTube.
🌍 Collaborating with brands and change-makers who are genuinely working to make travel better, so I can show you how to make smarter choices with your money and your miles.
🌱 Championing imperfect sustainability — however it looks for you. No gatekeeping, no all-or-nothing thinking. Just honest progress.
I’ll always give you real, grounded insight based on lived experience. When something is genuinely worth spending on, I’ll say so. When a free or low-cost alternative works just as well, I’ll tell you that too.
Let’s Work Together
If you’re a brand, organisation, or fellow change-maker working toward a more sustainable future in travel, I’d love to connect. Whether that means writing, podcasting, or collaborating on content that helps travellers make better choices — drop me a message via the Contact page.
If you want to make a real difference — helping local economies thrive, preserving delicate ecosystems, empowering communities, or protecting wildlife — let’s talk. 💚
A Note on Content
Everything on Budget Van Journeys is written for informational and inspirational purposes. Van life and travel look different for everyone — costs vary, routes change, and what works for one person may not work for another. Use these guides as a starting point and adapt them to your own situation. For anything involving vehicle safety, legal requirements, or technical van builds, please consult a qualified professional in your area.
